Course Overview

Embodied Allyship™ is an emotionally rigorous training that invites participants to develop skillful BE-ing for empowered DO-ing in the work of racial healing. In this 9-session live online course, participants will explore racism using both a personal and systemic lens. Themes include history and “new racism,” racial identity awareness, racial literacy, storytelling for racial healing, tools for interrupting systemic whiteness and aggressions, facilitation techniques, and an exploration of True Allyship™. Further, participants learn skillful design and competencies to become proficient at facilitating conversations of inclusion as well as everyday communication around equity. Throughout the training, participants will engage in exercises to heal and deepen embodiment, increasing their capacity for forgiveness, compassion, empathy - all critical for authentic connection. Mindfulness meditation and a variety of other contemplative practices will sustain us in this intellectually and emotionally rigorous work.

Live Zoom sessions will include lecture, small and large group discussions, affinity-connection time, practice with anti-racist tools, active listening exercises, and extensive personal reflection. Readings from other leading racial justice advocates are integrated throughout the course content. Participants will receive an e-workbook as well as a copy of the Racial Healing Autobiographies E-Book. They will be asked to purchase their own journal. Upon successful course completion, participants will receive an anti-bias training certificate. This course qualifies for ICF credits.

As a result of this training, participants will:

  • Utilize the foundation of mindful awareness for engaging with issues of race and racism;

  • Embark on a deep personal exploration of individual racialized identity;

  • Strengthen critical emotional competencies necessary for both healing and allyship;

  • Understand and recognize systemic whiteness, bias, and white fragility;

  • Improve ability to disrupt systemic whiteness at the personal, interpersonal, institutional, and societal levels;

  • Expand racial literacy for more skillful conversations with colleagues and clients;

  • Develop skills using various anti-racist tools and exercises;

  • Explore the design, tools, and competencies necessary to strengthen your capacity to facilitate inclusive conversations as it relates to your delivery model and content;

  • Experience connection within a caring and courageous community of allies; and

  • Commit to the lifelong work of embodied allyship to bring greater equity and inclusion to the world.

Weekly Live Sessions

Participants will engage in deep conceptual learning, interactive exercises, personal reflection, and dedicated small group exploration. Mindfulness, meditation, and a variety of other healing practices will sustain us in our work.

Weekly Ally-Pod Meetings

Ally-Pods will meet weekly between live sessions. Group members will support each other using guidelines for engaged listening and heart-felt open sharing through this journey of self-discovery, exploration and looking through different lenses.

Lifework

Selected readings, daily meditation practice and journaling will be encouraged as integral components of this experiential learning.

NOTE: This course is designed to hold a shared container for all of us; it is not an affinity course. To support "affinity-based" work that is conducive to racial healing, affinity time will be held throughout the course.
